Explaining something complicated to someone who is not an expert
The main obstacle is that you no longer remember what it was like not to know, and there is a name for that.

Experts explain badly with striking consistency, and the reason is well documented rather than a matter of communication skill.
The curse of knowledge
Once you know something, it becomes very difficult to imagine not knowing it.
Experiments demonstrating this are elegant. In one classic study, participants tapping out a well-known tune estimated that listeners would identify it far more often than they actually did — because the tapper hears the tune and cannot un-hear it.
Applied to explanation, the effect is that experts systematically overestimate what is obvious, skip steps that feel trivial, and use vocabulary whose meaning they have forgotten they learned.
Which means the problem is not that experts are inconsiderate. It is that they cannot perceive the gap.
What follows practically
Ask what they already know, rather than assuming a level.
This is the single most useful step and it is skipped almost universally, because it feels like a delay.
Get feedback continuously. Since you cannot detect the gap from inside, you need the other person to reveal it.
Asking them to explain it back is far more informative than asking whether it makes sense — which reliably produces yes, because people do not know what they have missed.
Watch for the moment they disengage. There is usually a specific point where comprehension stops, and everything after it is wasted. Finding that point is worth more than continuing.
Structure that helps
Start with why they should care, not with definitions.
Explanations conventionally build from foundations upward, which requires the listener to hold unmotivated material until it becomes useful.
Starting with the problem the thing solves gives them somewhere to put what follows.
Give the shape before the detail. A one-sentence version first, then the elaboration.
This lets the listener build a frame and file subsequent detail into it, rather than accumulating unconnected facts.
One new idea at a time. Working memory limits mean that a sentence introducing three unfamiliar concepts introduces none of them.
Concrete before abstract. A specific example, then the general principle — which is the opposite of how technical material is usually organised.
Analogies
Powerful and dangerous in equal measure.
An analogy maps unfamiliar structure onto familiar structure, which is genuinely how understanding is built.
It also imports properties that do not hold, and the listener has no way of knowing which.
Which makes the useful practice explicit: state where the analogy breaks. "It is like a river, except that nothing is flowing" is more useful than the analogy alone.
An analogy left unbounded produces confident misunderstanding, which is worse than not understanding, because it does not prompt further questions.
Jargon
Not inherently bad. Technical vocabulary is efficient among people who share it, and replacing every term with a paraphrase makes explanations longer and vaguer.
The problem is unexamined jargon — terms used without noticing that they are terms.
The practical test is whether you learned the word or always knew it. Anything learned is jargon to someone.
Where a term will be needed repeatedly, introduce it explicitly and use it. Where it appears once, replace it.
The simplification limit
Worth stating, because the instruction to simplify is given without limits.
Simplification that introduces falsehood is not explanation. It produces a model the listener will later have to unlearn, and unlearning is harder than learning.
The better move is to be explicit about the level: "this is roughly right and there is a complication I am leaving out" preserves both accessibility and accuracy, and it signals that there is more.
The test worth applying
Explain it to someone outside the field and ask them to explain it back.
What they get wrong is the map of your explanation's failures, and it is generally not where you expected.
Almost nobody does this, and it improves an explanation more than any amount of rewriting.
The curse of knowledge
The mechanism behind almost every failed explanation, and it is well documented.
Once you know something, you cannot reliably reconstruct what it was like not to know it, and you systematically overestimate how much of your explanation is landing.
The only reliable correction is external: ask the person to say it back in their own words. Their version reveals the gap immediately, and no amount of checking whether they have understood will.
