Open Plan Offices And The Sound Of Speech
Speech disrupts concentration in a way that machinery noise does not, because language is processed involuntarily and competes for the same system reading uses.

People working in open offices consistently report that conversation is harder to work through than louder mechanical noise. The distinction is not about volume but about what kind of sound the brain is obliged to process.
Language is processed whether you want it or not
Speech in a language you understand is decoded automatically. You cannot choose to hear an intelligible sentence as mere sound, in the way you can hear a fan as mere sound.
That automatic processing draws on the same verbal system used for reading, writing and holding instructions in mind. The overlap is what makes conversation particularly costly for text-based work.
Noise without linguistic content does not compete in the same way. A constant hum is loud but semantically empty, so it can be absorbed as background rather than parsed as meaning.
Intelligibility matters more than loudness
A conversation two desks away, clearly audible, is more disruptive than the same conversation at higher volume behind a wall that blurs the words. Once speech becomes unintelligible, much of the interference falls away.
This is why acoustic design in workplaces often aims at reducing clarity rather than reducing decibels. Screens, soft surfaces and background sound are attempts to make nearby speech harder to decode.
It also explains why speech in a language you do not know is easier to work through. Without comprehension, the sound stops competing for the verbal system and becomes ordinary noise.
Half-conversations are worse than whole ones
Hearing one side of a phone call is more distracting than hearing both sides of a conversation. The pattern is unpredictable, and prediction is part of how attention decides what to ignore.
A two-sided conversation gives enough context that the next utterance is loosely anticipated, allowing it to be filtered. A one-sided call offers no such anticipation, so each fragment arrives unpredicted and captures attention.
The effect is not a matter of politeness or irritation, though irritation follows. It is a structural feature of how attention allocates itself towards the unexpected.
The disruption is uneven across kinds of work
Tasks that are largely verbal suffer most: drafting, reading closely, checking figures against written descriptions. Tasks that are visual, spatial or highly practised suffer far less.
This is why two people in the same room can honestly disagree about whether the space is workable. They are doing different work, and speech intrudes on one type far more than the other.
It also explains the common pattern of doing routine work in the office and difficult work elsewhere. People sort tasks by their vulnerability to speech, usually without articulating the rule.
Music is not a neutral substitute
Music with lyrics reintroduces the same problem, since the words are processed whether or not you attend to them. Instrumental music avoids that, but familiarity still matters.
Unfamiliar music invites attention because it is unpredictable, while very familiar music fades. The useful property is predictability rather than any particular genre.
