What actually restores attention
Concentration is depletable and recoverable, and the activities that recover it are not the ones people reach for.

Sustained concentration degrades over a working day. What people do about it — a break spent scrolling — reliably fails to help, and the reason is instructive.
Attention restoration
The most useful framework comes from environmental psychology, which distinguishes two kinds of attention.
Directed attention is effortful and deliberate — the kind used to concentrate on something that is not intrinsically compelling. It fatigues.
Involuntary attention is drawn without effort by something inherently interesting. It does not fatigue in the same way.
Restoration, on this account, occurs when directed attention rests while involuntary attention is gently engaged.
Which explains why a walk in a park restores and scrolling a feed does not. Both are effortless in one sense; only one leaves directed attention unused.
A social feed demands continuous small decisions — read, skip, respond, judge — which is precisely the resource that needed the rest.
What the evidence supports
Time in natural environments. The most consistently supported intervention, with effects on attention measures reported across multiple studies.
Effect sizes vary and the mechanism is debated, and the direction is reliable enough to act on. A green space is better than a corridor, and a window with a view is better than none.
Physical movement. Even brief walking has been associated with improvements on attention and executive function measures.
It also addresses the physical cost of sustained sitting, which is a separate benefit.
Naps. Short naps, in the region of ten to twenty minutes, are associated with improved alertness without the grogginess that follows longer ones.
The grogginess — sleep inertia — comes from waking out of deeper sleep stages, which is why the duration matters.
Genuine disengagement. The common factor across everything that works.
A break spent thinking about the task is not a break. Research on recovery from work consistently finds that psychological detachment predicts restoration better than the duration of the break does.
What does not work
Task switching. Moving from one demanding task to another feels like variety and is not rest.
Social media and news. Continuous small decisions, frequently emotionally activating, and reliably reported as leaving people more depleted rather than less.
Email. The most common break activity in office work and among the least restorative, since it is the same cognitive mode as the work.
Caffeine as a substitute. It masks the feeling of depletion and does not restore the underlying capacity, and it borrows against sleep if taken late.
The break that works
Practically, from the above.
Leave the desk. Physical relocation is a strong cue for psychological disengagement.
Move, ideally outside, ideally where there is something green.
Do not take the phone, or take it and do not look at it. This is the hard part.
Five to fifteen minutes is enough for a short restoration; the returns are not linear beyond that.
The longer timescales
The same logic applies above the level of a single day.
Evenings. Recovery research finds that detachment after work predicts next-day wellbeing and performance. Checking work messages in the evening measurably reduces it.
Weekends and holidays. The restorative effect of a holiday is real and fades quickly on return — within weeks in most studies — which suggests that frequent shorter breaks may serve better than one long one.
Sleep. The dominant variable and the one most often traded away.
Sleep restriction produces measurable decrements in attention, working memory and error rates, and — importantly — people are poor at judging their own impairment. Subjective alertness recovers faster than actual performance does.
Which is why the most effective attention intervention available to most people is not a technique but an earlier bedtime, and why that is the least popular recommendation in the field.
The recovery that does not work
Worth naming, since it is what most people actually do.
Scrolling during a break does not restore attention. It occupies the same systems the work does, delivers a stream of novel demands, and generally leaves people reporting more fatigue rather than less.
The distinction in the literature is between effortful attention and the softer, undirected kind. Recovery requires the second, and a screen full of competing signals supplies neither.
