Reading, retention and the illusion of learning
The study techniques that feel most effective are consistently the least effective, and the ones that work feel like failure.

Cognitive psychology has produced an unusually clear set of findings about how people learn, and an equally clear finding that people consistently choose the wrong methods.
The techniques that do not work well
Rereading. The most common study method and among the least effective.
It produces a strong sense of familiarity, which is easily mistaken for knowledge. The material feels known because it feels recognisable.
Highlighting. Similar problem. It is passive, it produces the feeling of engagement, and reviews of the evidence find little benefit over reading alone.
It can be actively harmful where it directs later review toward isolated sentences rather than to relationships between ideas.
Massed practice. Studying a topic intensively in one block.
Produces good short-term performance and poor long-term retention, which is precisely the wrong trade for anything you want to keep.
The techniques that do work
Retrieval practice. Testing yourself rather than reviewing.
The finding is robust and large: attempting to recall material strengthens memory more than restudying it for the same time. This is called the testing effect and it has been replicated extensively.
It works even when the retrieval attempt fails, provided feedback follows — which is counterintuitive and well supported.
Practically: close the book and write what you remember. Then check.
Spaced repetition. Distributing study over time rather than concentrating it.
The spacing effect is one of the oldest findings in experimental psychology and remains one of the most reliable.
The optimal interval expands: review shortly after first learning, then at increasing gaps. Software implementing this exists and works.
Interleaving. Mixing different topics or problem types rather than blocking them.
Performance during practice is worse, which is why nobody chooses it. Retention and transfer are better.
Elaboration. Explaining how and why, connecting new material to what you already know.
Explaining to someone else, or to an imaginary someone, which forces the gaps in understanding into view.
Why people choose badly
The central finding, and it is about metacognition rather than about memory.
The effective techniques feel harder and produce worse immediate performance. The ineffective ones feel fluent and produce a sense of mastery.
People judge learning by how it feels during study, and that judgement is systematically wrong.
The concept of desirable difficulties captures it: conditions that impair performance during practice frequently improve long-term retention.
Which means the feeling of struggling is, within limits, the signal that it is working — and the feeling of smooth comprehension is the signal that it is not.
Applying it to reading
For anything you want to retain rather than merely experience.
Read a section, close the book, write what it said. This takes a few minutes and does more than reading the section three times.
Write in your own words rather than copying phrases, because paraphrasing requires understanding and copying does not.
Return to your notes at spaced intervals rather than at the end.
Note questions the material raised, then look for the answers. A question makes the eventual answer far more memorable than encountering it passively.
Note-taking
Worth a specific note because the practice is nearly universal and frequently unhelpful.
Verbatim transcription produces poor retention, because it can be done without processing meaning.
Studies comparing longhand and laptop note-taking have found advantages for longhand on conceptual questions, with the proposed mechanism being that writing is slower and therefore forces summarising.
That literature has had mixed replication, and the underlying point — that processing beats transcription — is well supported independent of the medium.
Which means the useful discipline is to write fewer words in your own phrasing rather than more words in the speaker's.
The honest caveat
Most of this research uses material and timescales that suit experiments — factual recall, vocabulary, defined content.
How well it transfers to reading for understanding of complex arguments, or to skill acquisition, is less well established.
The core finding — that retrieval beats review and that spacing beats massing — is robust enough to act on regardless.
