Boredom, and why it might be useful

The gaps that used to be empty are now filled, and there is a reasonable case that something was lost in the exchange.

Waiting for a bus, queueing, sitting on a train — every gap in the day now has something available to fill it. Whether that matters is a live question with a modest but interesting evidence base.

What happens in an unfilled moment

The brain does not idle. Neuroimaging identified a set of regions more active during rest than during focused tasks, generally called the default mode network.

Activity in that network is associated with mind wandering, autobiographical memory, thinking about other people, and imagining the future.

The interpretation is contested — it is not a single system with a single function — and the association with self-referential and prospective thought is reasonably well established.

Which means an unfilled moment is not empty. It is doing something, and filling it displaces that.

The creativity claim

Worth stating carefully because it is frequently overstated.

Several studies have found that a period of undemanding activity between exposure to a problem and attempting it improves performance on some creative tasks, compared with continuous work or with demanding distraction.

The effect appears for undemanding tasks specifically — something occupying the hands but not the mind — rather than for complete rest or for a demanding distraction.

Effect sizes are modest and replication has been imperfect. The direction is consistent enough to be worth taking seriously and not strong enough to support the confident claims made about it.

The practical version: stepping away from a stuck problem to do something undemanding is more likely to help than pushing on or than switching to something equally demanding.

Boredom as a signal

A more useful framing than treating it as an unpleasant state to be eliminated.

Research on boredom characterises it as a state arising when attention cannot be engaged and the current activity is experienced as meaningless.

Which makes it informative: it indicates a mismatch between what you are doing and what would engage you.

Removing the discomfort without addressing the mismatch — by reaching for a phone — resolves the symptom and preserves the situation that produced it.

People who habitually fill every gap may therefore be losing the signal that would otherwise prompt a change.

What the evidence does not support

Worth stating, because this topic attracts more assertion than data.

There is no good evidence that phones have destroyed attention spans as a general capacity. The widely repeated claim that human attention span has fallen below that of a goldfish traces to a report with no identifiable source and is not supported.

The evidence on screen time and wellbeing is mixed, with effect sizes in large studies generally small and causation difficult to establish.

The defensible claim is narrower: that continuous availability of stimulation changes what happens in the gaps, and that some of what happened in the gaps was useful.

What to actually do

Not a digital detox, which the evidence for is thin and which most people abandon.

Leave one recurring gap unfilled. The walk to the station, the queue, the first ten minutes of the day. One is enough to notice the difference.

Do something undemanding when stuck. Walk, wash up, tidy something. Not scroll, which is demanding in exactly the way that prevents the effect.

Carry a way to capture. The ideas that arrive in unfilled moments are easily lost, and knowing you can record one removes the anxiety about forgetting it.

Notice what the boredom is about. Persistent boredom in a particular context is information about that context rather than a personal failing.

The proportionate conclusion

Filling every gap is not a catastrophe and it is a choice being made by default rather than deliberately.

Reclaiming a small number of them costs nothing, occasionally produces the solution to something you were stuck on, and restores a signal that is otherwise permanently suppressed.

That is a modest claim, and it is what the evidence supports.

Tolerating it is the skill

The practical implication is not to seek boredom but to stop preventing it.

The queue, the walk, the ten minutes before a meeting — these were the intervals where thinking happened, and they are now reliably filled.

Leaving the phone in a pocket during those gaps costs nothing and restores a category of unstructured attention that most people no longer get at all.
